Due to the sweet and bitter stories I have been hearing about the
school's hostel, I couldn't for sure ascertain a clear picture of what
it really is but this was not long because I soon had a taste of the same old wine.
Haven passed the 2013 cut-off of 200 in Jamb to make me eligible to
enrol for the PUTME exam to be written in July, I went to the Ugbowo
campus of Uniben to gather some exam materials from a close friend who
is a student in the school. In order to take advantage of the
opportunity,I decided to also visit the school male hostel to see for
myself if what I have been hearing was true..
Not mentioning my ordeal before finally locating my afore mentioned
friend and enquiring on the materials I came for, we headed for the
male hostel. Already thinking and picturing in my mind what I was
expecting to see but aghast I was at what met my visions.
Was this a modern version of the Nazi concentration camp?
In my wildest dream, I have never Imagined 10 students living in a room.
I have never envisaged a federal citadel of higher learning to be
equipped with such poor housing facility as the grotesque vision that
met my eyes.
How were the students able to survive in such an environment?
In such an unhealthy environ where you wake up only to be greeted by a
pile of dirt, stench due to congestion, overpopulated atmosphere.
How were these students able to adapt to such poor conditions? Are
they not sick? Won't they fall sick?
How could the school leave the hostels to deteriorate to such a degree?
And these same students living with multitudes in one room, cooking,
sleeping, moving, studying and storing supplies in one room are also
pulled and pushed by the pressure of lectures and exams. They must
study and learn in such environment.
My heart bled at the sight of it. Is this where I am coming to? I asked my self.
I couldn't fathom why students were abandoned to such a low state of
housing by the authorities. I thought the hostel to be one of the most
pleasant sight in the school, but that was not the case. I pictured
the hostel to be the most catered and maintained place in the school but that was far from what I saw. I saw an abandoned project,a
neglected site,a decayed yet decaying aspect of the school.
An acquaintance made an effort to explain how he got sick on his first
stay at the hostel, how they had to buy bulbs in their rooms, and how
they never complained, because no one will hear them.
The picture I finally got was not that of a school hostel but of a
camp,a refugee camp.
I had a testimony for myself.
The hostel is not home to any degree. The hostel can never be likened
to a lodge for any reason.
If you wanna stay in Uniben hostel, GET READY.!!!
